In the Beginning…Genesis 2

Genesis 2

Genesis 2:1-6,

This is a wrap-up for chapter one as well as a type of recap… the word THUS shows a completion of the creation week.

“Thus was the history of the 7 days of creation during the week God created the earth and the universe.”

Interesting to note that verse 5 it says,

“Before any plant was in the field or any herb had sprouted FOR God had not yet made it rain…” I find this interesting, because this makes it sound as though rain was necessary to make things sprout and grow, but I have always been taught that it never rained on the earth before the flood. However, clearly they had plants growing and herbs sprouting LONG before the flood, so….

On the 7th day God rested and He sanctified that day (set it apart and consecrated it) as holy to be observed as a day of rest. This ALL happened BEFORE the fall of man, so observance of the Sabbath is NOT an issue of Old Testament Law, but one of creation!

This completes the account of the History of God creating and making the universe.

2:7-8 (Adam is center stage)

  • God Created the earth….He made the plants and animals – but He cut and fashioned (yasar) His man. Yatsar is a term one would use for an artist’s work in fact it is used in reference to a potter with clay which is how God made man…the idea of squeezing the clay is part of this thought.
    • Men are God’s glory, but Women are man’s glory – I Cor. 11:7
  • God started a garden IN Eden. Eden was a larger land mass which had the Garden IN IT.
  • God placed Adam there in the garden. (Eve was not here yet)

2:9-14 – God plants the garden for man in the land of Eden and names the rivers that ran through it.

  1. Pishon= increase
  2. Havilah = circle
  3. Gihon = gushing forth
  4. Cush = black
  5. Hiddekel = rapid (possibly the Tigris river)
  6. Assyria = a step
  7. Euphrates = fruitful

2:15-25 – Adam is the only one God speaks to throughout this chapter. Adam is center stage!

  • God speaks to Adam throughout the chapter
  • God essentially “planted” Adam in the garden TO tend the garden and told him so and to work it and protect it.
  • God commanded concerning the trees
  • It is possible that God pointed out to Adam the rivers and the places were Gold and Onyx were hidden.

At this time everything was man focused…and when everything fell apart through Adam and Eve’s sin God didn’t call for Eve… He said, “Adam where are YOU?” in Genesis 3:9

This does NOT speak to woman’s value or importance, but it does speak to and clarify her role versus his role from the moment of Creation. It is also VERY important to note that all of this was BEFORE the fall and was therefore NOT a result OF IT. This was God’s design FROM THE BEGINNING. Which is WHY Paul always goes back to Chapters 1-3 in addressing issues of gender in the church.

  • God (presumably the Godhead amongst themselves) said that is was not pleasant, morally correct or fruitful for man to dwell alone.
  • Woman was to be one who helps (Ezer) and corresponds to man. (They do not complete each other, but they compliment each other by her acclimating herself to him.
  • Vs. 19 the word ‘GROUND’ can mean the planet as a whole (Amos 3:2 – example)
  • Animals brought to Adam for naming (The importants of naming a thing – overseer)
  • In God Adam had met his Superior
  • In the animals he had met his inferiors
  • In woman he was going to meet his equal.
  • vs. 21 God causes Adam to fall asleep – takes his rib and crafts a woman.
    • God is owner and needs NO permission – nor does he seek it
    • ‘One of his ribs’ is Minnay sela out of side
      • “One of” reveals he had more than one of whatever God took so that at least one if not more of the same object remained IN Adam
    • Vs. 22 God Created the earth, He MADE the plants and animals, He cut and fashioned man but God constructed or built (banah) the woman. Perhaps that is where we got the old phrase “She’d built!”
      • She is unique in that she was made out of already quickened flesh. God did not breath into her – He breathed into Adam and made her from that quickened flesh.
      • It is also an implication that God took the crafted flesh of Adam and refined it for the construction of woman – by refined we mean make less coarse, to reduce in vigor or intensity. Like comparing whole grain flour with white flour.
    • She was presented TO Adam.
    • Women are Man’s glory – She is made For & FROM him – Gen. 2:18 & I Cor. 11:8-10
  • Vs. 23 Adam recognized and declared the relationship God intended between man and woman.
    • Bone of my bone – a phrase that came to represent close intimate relationship.
    • Flesh of my flesh – That is ‘one flesh’
      • Intimate union and unified purpose
        • Sexual union – 1Cor. 6:16
        • Intimate companionship – Mal. 2:13,14
    • Called woman – Gender is named by man – woman (Ishshaw) this one was taken out.
  • Because she was taken out of man’s side, man will uproot from his parents and cling to her and they will become echawd basar unified flesh
  • Both naked and without shame – the man and HIS wife (not disappointed or not ashamed)
    • 3:1 interesting because the word often translated as cunning has a secondary meaning of naked. Being reptilian, snakes and other reptiles are less clothed than land dwelling animals with fur coats.

How far back does MAN go?

Paleontologist George G. Simpson, graduate of Yale University and well awarded in the evolutionary community possessing medals from the National Academy of Sciences the Linnean Society of London & the Royal Society in recognition of his distinguished contributions to general evolutionary theory, based on a profound study of palaeontology, particularly of vertebrates.

Had this to say in this published work entitled, The Major Features of Evolution, by Columbia Press,

“In spite of these examples, it remains true, as every paleontologist knows, that most new species, genera and families and that nearly all new categories above the level of families, appear in the record suddenly and are not led up to by known, gradual, completely continuous transitional sequences.”

There is direct proof of the existence of man in every strata of the geologic column. This makes mankind VERY old with no evolutionary precursors or the bible correct that man was made in God’s image from the beginning.

Silver, brass and iron artifacts embedded in veins of coal supposedly laid down over 354 million years ago in the carboniferous period of the Palaeozoic era.

Concerning Evolutionary World views on Population:
Adam - human population

As recently as 2007 the estimated world population of 6 billion, 575 million, 972 thousand, 342 people – if given a 1 foot square piece of ground to stand on could all fit within the city limits of Jacksonville, Florida!

Adam - human population

Now, ten years later in 2017, the estimated world population is 7,484,325,476, so we have finally outgrown Jacksonville, FL and would have to branch a little. Now it is clearly silly to imagine people LIVING in a single square foot, but that was not the point. Today, each person on this planet could be given 4 acres EACH to live on and there would still be nearly 100 million acres of land completely empty! We do NOT have a population problem, we have an intelligence problem!

One man I heard talking about this once said…“If it is crowded where you live…MOVE!!!”

Hi my name is Mark and though I am opposed to titles, I am currently the only Pastor (shepherd/elder) serving our assembly right now.

I have been Pastoring in one capacity or another for nearly 30 years now, though never quite like I am today.

Early in 2009 the Lord revealed to me that the way we had structured our assembly (church) was not scriptural in that it was out of sync with what Paul modeled for us in the New Testament. In truth, I (like many pastors I am sure) never even gave this fundamental issue of church structure the first thought. I had always assumed that church structure was largely the same everywhere and had been so from the beginning. While I knew Paul had some very stringent things to say about the local assembly of believers, the point of our gatherings together and who may or may not lead, I never even considered studying these issues but assumed we were all pretty much doing it right...safety in numbers right?! Boy, I couldn't have been more wrong!

So needless to say, my discovery that we had been doing it wrong for nearly two decades was a bit of a shock to me! Now, this "revelation" did not come about all at once but over the course of a few weeks. We were a traditional single pastor led congregation. It was a top-bottom model of ministry which is in part biblical, but not in the form of a monarchy.

The needed change did not come into focus until following 9 very intense months of study and discussions with those who were leaders in our church at the time.

We now understand and believe that the Bible teaches co-leadership with equal authority in each local assembly. Having multiple shepherds with God's heart and equal authority protects both Shepherds and sheep. Equal accountability keeps authority and doctrine in check. Multiple shepherds also provide teaching with various styles and giftings with leadership skills which are both different and complementary.

For a while we had two co-pastors (elders) (myself and one other man) who led the church with equal authority, but different giftings. We both taught in our own ways and styles, and our leadership skills were quite different, but complimentary. We were in complete submission to each other and worked side-by-side in the labor of shepherding the flock.

Our other Pastor has since moved on to other ministry which has left us with just myself. While we currently only have one Pastor/Elder, it is our desire that God, in His faithfulness and timing, may bring us more as we grow in maturity and even in numbers.

As to my home, I have been married since 1995 to my wonderful wife Terissa Woodson who is my closest friend and most trusted ally.

As far as my education goes, I grew up in a Christian home, but questioned everything I was ever taught.

I graduated from Bible college in 1990 and continued to question everything I was ever taught (I do not mention my college in order to avoid being labeled).

Perhaps my greatest preparation for ministry has been life and ministry itself. To quote an author I have come to enjoy namely Fredrick Buechner in his writing entitled, Now and Then, "If God speaks to us at all other than through such official channels as the Bible and the church, then I think that He speaks to us largely through what happens to us...if we keep our hearts open as well as our ears, if we listen with patience and hope, if we remember at all deeply and honestly, then I think we come to recognize beyond all doubt, that, however faintly we may hear Him, He is indeed speaking to us, and that, however little we may understand of it, His word to each of us is both recoverable and precious beyond telling." ~ Fredrick Buechner

Well that is about all there is of interest to tell you about me.

I hope our ministry here is a blessing to you and your family. I also hope that it is only a supplement to a local church where you are committed to other believers in a community of grace.

~God Bless!
